ChildrenFriends of HAPCSO was established in 2003 by a group of  Ethiopians living in Maryland to support the effective grassroots work of HAPCSO, HIWOT HIV/AIDS Prevention, Care and Support Organization established in 1999 by Sister Tibebe Maco.

As we all know, Ethiopia faces a dire crisis with HIV/AIDS spreading across the country at an alarming rate. As a satellite support organization, Friends of HAPCSO’s mission is to raise awareness about the effects of the disease on our community, both in Ethiopia, abroad and facilitate the Diaspora’s involvement in the fight against HIV/AIDS. We believe that Ethiopians can play a pivotal role by supporting effective indigenous grassroots organizations like HAPCSO who are making undeniable impact.

Since its inception five years ago, Friends of HAPCSO has raised over $130,000.00 dollars through fundraising events and relationships with organizations and individual donors. Members of Friends of HAPCSO have particularly focused on encouraging Ethiopians living in the United Sates and Europe to sponsor HIV/AIDS orphans under HAPCSO’s care. To date, Friends of HAPCSO has facilitated the sponsorship of 300 orphans and vulnerable children of all ages and living conditions.

Every year, Friends of HAPCSO hosts a fundraising event attended by Sister Tibebe Maco, to give sponsors and supporters the opportunity to get up to date information about HAPCSO’s work and progress. Over the years, Friends of HAPCSO has been successful in cultivating strong relationships with local youth organizations such as UMCP, UMBC and Blair High School. These organizations have successfully raised money for HAPCSO while raising awareness about HIV/AIDS in their communities.

HAPCSO’s vision:

An Ethiopian society free of HIV/AIDS

HAPCSO’s Mission:

  • Motivate, educate and empower our society to protect itself from all forms of
    HIV/AIDS transmission.
  • Provide compassionate care and support to those affected by the diseases.
  • Support, educate and care for children orphaned by HIV/AIDS.
